No Self-Control
Space52
November 3 - December 2, 2023
No Self-Control is a conflation between intimacy and inaccessibility. The exhibition examines the fragility of the subject’s physical integrity and probes the bestial aspects of the ego. This inquiry is structured around situations of proximity that remain unresolved.

The exhibited artworks prompt the viewer to confront the limits of bodies in palpable and visceral ways, calling for an embodied response. Images and objects resist stable distance, with some demanding close inspection while others repel approach through their material charge. As a result, viewing often requires physical adjustment, hesitation or rerouting within the gallery.

Some pieces occupy the space with a sense of exposure rather than display. Rounded and hollowed sculptural forms sit low to the ground, suggesting bodily receptacles or organs emptied of function, while rigid vertical elements interrupt circulation and narrow the movement of the viewer. Fragile materials such as glass, resin, wax and plastic appear stretched, sealed or compressed, holding traces of touch, pressure and residue.

Installed tightly within a corner, a diptych of thorn-like forms sprayed on canvas introduces a sense of constraint, shaping how the images are encountered and limiting sustained viewing. The placement forces a compressed viewing angle, emphasizing obstruction and turning looking into a conditional act.

Elsewhere, uncanny self-portraits register the loss or slippage of identity, producing figures that appear familiar yet alien. Facial features are rendered as composite, resisting recognition and coherence. Similarly, a video-sculptural installation on the top floor reinforces this sense of displacement, forming an uninhabitable environment of suspended elements made of bronze and rubber.
